Money Matters

March 16th, 2012

I have been called many things in my time, but I take exception to being called stingy. I have always looked after my money, and it has helped to look after me and enable me to do the things in life that I enjoy. I love to experience new things, travel around, meet new people and I spend money on those things that make me happy. I have earned the money I spend by working very hard, and so I take exception to people trying to make me spend it on useless, waste of time things or crazy ideas.

I was recently trying to get a caravan insurance quote from a company that I have had dealings with in the past, and they have been very good to me for a number of years. The quote was reasonable, but I thought that I would shop around to see what else was on offer. Upon speaking to one other company, I was appalled at the treatment that I received, as I was actually called stingy by the phone operator! I was answering a number of questions about finances etc, and the vehicle that I owned etc, and then towards the end of the call I was asked if I wanted to pay an extra amount into a charity fund each month. When I said no, the reaction was quite unbelievable, instead of moving onto the next question, the operator proceeded to enquire as to why I did not wish to donate each month as part of the monthly payments.

Rule No. 1:

Never lose money.

Rule No. 2:

Never forget rule No. 1.

~ Warren Buffet

I did not phone up to speak to someone about donating to a charity that I knew nothing about, nor did I phone up to get a lecture from a stranger on what I should be doing with my money. I am actually already involved with lots of charity work, for charities which I actually know and am passionate about, so I was not interested in this one, and think it’s outrageous to be pressured into such things. As it happens, I decided to go with the original company who have been very good, and am going on a new camping adventure in a few days time.
